This was my topic when I presented last week to a group of incredible adults (therapists, youth workers, teachers, managers) who dedicate their careers to working with young people who have had a rough start to life.

How can we really show up as present, regulated and whole, if we are not caring adequately for ourselves?

My argument would be - we can't. 👀

I reflected on my experience of early career burnout, to give voice to what many early career psychologists go through.

I emphasised (as I always do, to anyone who will listen) that meditation is magic 🙇‍♀️ for building the self awareness and presence that we need to survive and thrive in these roles. I emphasised that self care is much more than gym visits or long baths, but rather about developing the skills needed in your work role to PREVENT burnout or vicarious trauma. We talked about nervous system regulation to stay within OUR window of tolerance.

The response in the room was a reminder of how eager the adults in this space are to learn to look after themselves as best they can - so they can continue to show up for the young people and do the work that means so much to them 🙏
